Editor's note

Nonogram asks you to draw a picture you cannot see, using only row and column lengths, and the satisfaction of a correct line is unlike anything else in this category. The four puzzles are 10 by 10 — large enough to feel like a picture, small enough to finish in a sitting.

Nonogram is picture logic: the numbers beside each row and above each column describe runs of filled cells, and your job is to reconstruct the hidden image. A clue of 3 2 means a run of three, a gap of at least one, then a run of two.

There are four 10×10 puzzles, each a different shape. The game starts with an empty grid and no feedback beyond the clues, so progress comes from crossing out impossible cells and marking confirmed gaps.

The mark tool is as important as the fill tool. Most of a nonogram is solved by proving where a block cannot go, not by guessing where it can.

How to play Nonogram

  • Read the row clues on the left and column clues on the top.
  • Click a cell to cycle between empty, filled and marked with an X.
  • Fill cells to match every run in every row and column.
  • Use Check to highlight incorrect filled cells for a moment.

Tips & strategy

Nonograms are solved by elimination. The first filled cell is usually forced by a clue that is longer than the available space.

  • Start with the longest clues. A run of 8 in a 10-wide row has only three possible positions, and the middle six cells are always filled.
  • Count overlaps: if a clue is longer than half the line, the centre cells must be part of it.
  • Mark gaps with X as soon as a run is complete; they prevent you from accidentally extending it.
  • Work on rows and columns that are nearly solved — a single missing cell is usually forced by the crossing clue.
  • Do not guess. If a line is ambiguous, switch to the perpendicular direction; the crossing clues usually resolve it.
  • Use Check sparingly. It tells you that something is wrong but not where the deduction failed.
