Print and play

Free printables

Sheets that print straight from the browser in a few seconds: board games with the same rules and the same fleet as the online versions, plus a library of themed word searches, mazes, sudoku and word scrambles. Free to print, free to photocopy for classroom use.

Why print a game you can play in the browser

Because paper does three things a screen does not. It works when the wifi does not, it lets two people sit across from each other without passing a device back and forth, and it survives a classroom with thirty children and six tablets. These sheets are the paper versions of the games on the site, so a group can learn the rules online and then play the same game at a table.

Both sheets are plain HTML rather than a PDF download. Use the print button on either page, or your browser's own print command, and choose "Save as PDF" if you want a file you can email to someone. Nothing is gated, there is no sign-up and no watermark.

About the word search sheets

Each word search sheet is a 12 by 12 grid with eight words from one theme hidden in straight lines running in eight directions, a name and date line, and an answer key that prints on a second sheet. There is a themed sheet for every theme in the word search library, and each one can be played on screen exactly as printed.

They are built for the case where a screen is not the point: a classroom with more students than tablets, a table where two people want to race, a rainy afternoon without a data plan.

Printing tips

  • Print at 100 percent scale. The grid is sized from the width of the page, so a "fit to page" setting stretches the squares and two sheets printed at different times end up with different sized boards.
  • Black and white is fine. The sheets use solid fills rather than colour, so they come out clean on the cheapest printer.
  • Print two copies for a two-player game of battleship: one player needs their own fleet grid and their own tracking grid.
  • For checkers, print on ordinary paper and use coins, bottle caps or counters as pieces. Print on card if you want it to survive more than one afternoon.
  • Teachers: photocopy as many as you need. The sheets are free to reproduce for classroom and club use, and no attribution is required on the copy.

Prefer to play on a screen

Every game here also runs in the browser, with a computer opponent that is good enough to practise against. Browse the classic board and two-player games for the full set, or start with battleship and checkers.
