Reversi — also known as Othello — is an 8×8 board game where every move flips the opponent's discs. You place a disc so that one or more of the opponent's pieces are bracketed between the new disc and one of yours, and the bracketed pieces change colour.
The score is not the point until the board is full. Early on, having fewer discs is often an advantage because it gives the opponent fewer legal moves; the corners, which can never be flipped, are the real prize.
You play black against a CPU that values corners, avoids the squares next to them, and tries to limit your mobility.
How to play Reversi
- You play black; the CPU plays white. Black moves first.
- Click a highlighted square to place a disc and flip the bracketed white discs.
- If a player has no legal move, their turn is skipped.
- The game ends when neither player can move; the larger disc count wins.
Tips & strategy
Reversi is a mobility game. The player with more options usually wins, even if they have fewer discs.
- Take corners whenever you can. A corner disc can never be flipped and anchors the edges around it.
- Avoid the squares diagonally adjacent to a corner early — they give the opponent a route into the corner.
- Do not worry about the disc count in the first half. Mobility and stable edges matter more.
- Force the CPU to play in bad squares by limiting its legal moves.
- Build stable discs along the edges; edge discs can only be flipped from one direction, which makes them safer.
- In the endgame, count the remaining moves rather than the current score — the last move often decides the game.
